Sivananda Yoga

Shivananda yoga is classical hatha yoga. Hatha yoga is that part of yoga that helps to achieve peace of mind through physical exercises and helps to bring our body, mind and soul into harmonious harmony. The tools of hatha yoga are breathing exercises (pranayama) and yoga postures (asanas).

The name Sivananda Yoga is used after the first teacher of this style, Swami Sivananda (1887-1963). Swami Sivananda was a doctor by profession. After completing a successful medical career, he decided to devote the rest of his life to yoga, largely because he was interested in preventing disease in the first place. Swami Shivananda has selected the twelve yoga postures from a vast array of postures that provide maximum benefit to the whole body in one practice. The exercises of the Shivananda yoga system are well balanced: a stretch in one direction is always followed by a stretch in the opposite direction.

In 1957, Swami Sivananda sent his best hatha yoga student Swami Vishnudevananda (1927-1993) to the West saying: “Go to the West. People are waiting!” Once there, Swami Vishnudevananda adapted ancient yoga techniques to Western lifestyles. Yoga is based on self-discipline and the belief of simple living and high spiritual thinking. The body is the temple of the soul, which can also be called a means of transport in a figurative sense, which makes special demands on us in order to function smoothly. Five things are important in a car: lubrication system, battery, cooling system, fuel and a responsible driver behind the wheel. But now let’s look at human needs.

1. The right exercises: Exercising is like systematically “lubricating” your joints, muscles, tendons and other parts of your body to stay mobile and flexible.

2. Correct breathing: the body is connected to a battery (solar plexus) in which huge reserves of energy are stored. Through special yogic breathing (pranayama), this energy is released and physical and mental rejuvenation takes place.

3. Proper relaxation: In order to cool down the whole system, the car has a radiator. However, if the body and mind are constantly overworked, our performance decreases. Relaxation is a natural way to recharge the body.

4. Proper nutrition: ensures proper fuel for the body. Optimal collection of nutrients, air, water and sunlight is essential for our organism.

5. Positive thinking and meditation: keeps the (car) driver under control, the intellect is purified. Nature is subdued with conscious control through fortitude and concentration.

Asanas tone muscles and connective tissues, keep the back and joints flexible, stimulate blood and food circulation, and the functioning of the endocrine system. With the help of correct breathing, the body gathers energy and organizes the activity of the nervous system and brain, increases willpower, self-control and concentration. Relaxation relieves the body of tension and gives rest. Proper nutrition ensures proper fuel for the body. Optimal collection of nutrients, air, water and sunlight is essential for our organism. Positive thinking and meditation increase mental strength and intuition and ensure inner peace and balance.

Sivananda Yoga has maintained its purity and authenticity thanks to the Sivananda Yoga Centers and the International Yoga Teacher Training Center (TTC) founded by Swami Vishnudevananda.

“Health leads to well-being, peace of mind leads to happiness. Yoga shows the way.” – Swami Vishnudevananda
